Agriculture: Duties

One of your tutors will have explained to you during your interview that it is necessary for you to complete duties as part of your qualification whilst you are at college. These duties are planned to ensure that you obtain good practical skills to industry standard and also to build on your existing abilities.

Due to the nature of the industry in which your future career lies and in order to be realistic work, some of these duties will be outside your normal timetabled hours and some will be at weekends. It will be your responsibility to ensure that you attend in your allocated slots. These will be agreed at the start of term with your group and your Programme Manager.

We realise that for non residential students the timing of these duties may create difficulties with transport. If you cannot arrange a lift there is the opportunity to stay on site, in shared accommodation for your duty weeks. If you wish to stay on campus for your duty weeks there will be a cost of £25 per night which includes food.

Duty accommodation can be booked through the Student Services Coordinator (Maxine Bentley) in the Student Services office, contactable on 01395 562320 once you have started your course and have been advised of duty dates.

As duties will take place in early mornings whilst it is still dark please ensure you bring a torch with you and light/reflective clothing to make you more visible when crossing the road between the Campus and the Farm.

Please Note: All students whose practical activites will inlude time spent on Bicton Home Farm will be required to wear steel toe capped wellies, a Hi-Vis vest (or another suitable Hi-Vis outer layer), and overalls whilst on the farm.
